The tree looks healthy but it is not. A religious life looks healthy but it is not. A Christian can use all the right buzz words, read the Bible, attend church and do all the churchy things but lives a lie and does not demonstrate the love of Christ in daily actions. In today's world, a Christian can "look religious" but is not. A person can appear to have deep faith that carries momentous burdens and appear to talk with God fervently in prayer, but at the same time, it is all a show.

Have you heard the story of Hannah Teter? Hannah was a gold medalist snowboarder in Torino in 2006, and a silver medalist in Vancouver. Hannah donates her winnings from all her contests, plus proceeds from a family maple syrup business, to the community of Kirindon, Kenya (through World Vision). So far the money has been used for such things as clean water, sanitation, health education, and bicycles. Hannah is all of 23 years old.

Is God present in this disaster? Yes, of course. But not in the sense of causing it or using it as some sort of judgment. God is present in the good done by those who go about doing ordinary and extraordinary things.

Those are the acts of God. [Melissa Bane Sevier]

...I was putting together the personal hygiene packs Non and I plan to bring to include in VPC's efforts regarding the Haitian rescue mission. At first, I was rather depressed at the thought that our efforts are but the proverbial "drop in the bucket." And as I thought and prayed about it while I was putting the packages together, I was comforted to think that first, what is really important are our prayers, because God is listening. And second, what a wonder it is that so many "drops in the bucket" will ultimately make such a difference and it is all because people realize that they are, as you said Sunday, Christ's feet, hands, and heart in this world. their proposals show that they have it all figured out-how God works, who is naughty and who is nice. Jesus' answer informs them that all people are equally human, equally in need of repentance, and will stand before the judgment of God. So, repentance is necessary for all people.

Jesus' words are meant to tell us that God is not punishing sinfulness through tragic events. Instead of interpreting tragic events through our blame-colored glasses, perhaps we should learn to look at our own lives. "Unless we repent, we will perish just as they did." These words mean that none of us is blameless. No one of us really even deserves the life we have been given.

Jesus' disciples are forever freed from the ancient notion that prosperity and good health are evidence of divine favor, whereas poverty and suffering are clear sings of divine wrath.. Jesus rejects such attempts at calculation, not simply because they are futile, but because they direct attention from the primary issue-the obligation of every person to live in penitence and trust before God without linking one's loyalty to God to life's sorrows or joys. All are to repent or perish.
