Hi Ann,
As I thought about it, sounds like one theory is that those persons were 
'bounded' or bonded to do what they did if they had no control over their 
lives, no free will to do other that what they did, in other words.
Mmm.  As you note, Paul is saying something else.

I however do like 'the devil made me do it' idea...
