[Propertalk] READINGS for ALL SAINTS DAY

The following are the readings for All Saints Day, Nov. 1, according to the Revised Common (RCL), Episcopal (ECUSA), Roman Catholic, Canadian BAS, Canadian (ACC) variant of the RCL, and the Church of England (Common Worship) lectionaries. All readings are taken from the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the Bible. Unless noted otherwise, the ECUSA Canadian and C of E lectionaries are identical to the RCL for this day.
In most places, including the ECUSA, Anglican Church of Canada, and Church of England, these readings may be used on the Sunday following All Saints Day (Nov. 7 this year).



OLD TESTAMENT: Daniel 7: 1 - 3, 15 - 18  (RCL) 

Dani 7:1 (NRSV) In the first year of King Belshaz'zar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: 2 I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, 3 and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. 

15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. 16 I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: 17 "As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever--forever and ever." 


Revelation 7: 2 - 4, 9 - 17 (Roman Catholic) 

Reve 7:2 (NRSV) I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to damage earth and sea, 3 saying, "Do not damage the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have marked the servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads." 
4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred forty-four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the people of Israel: 

9 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying, 
"Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" 
11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 singing, 
"Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom 
and thanksgiving and honor 
and power and might 
be to our God forever and ever! Amen." 
13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" 14 I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 
15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, 
and worship him day and night within his temple, 
and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 
16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; 
the sun will not strike them, 
nor any scorching heat; 
17 for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, 
and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, 
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." 


PSALM 149 (all but Roman Catholic) 

Psal 149:1 (NRSV) Praise the LORD! 
Sing to the LORD a new song, 
his praise in the assembly of the faithful. 
2 Let Israel be glad in its Maker; 
let the children of Zion rejoice in their King. 
3 Let them praise his name with dancing, 
making melody to him with tambourine and lyre. 
4 For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; 
he adorns the humble with victory. 
5 Let the faithful exult in glory; 
let them sing for joy on their couches. 
6 Let the high praises of God be in their throats 
and two-edged swords in their hands, 
7 to execute vengeance on the nations 
and punishment on the peoples, 
8 to bind their kings with fetters 
and their nobles with chains of iron, 
9 to execute on them the judgment decreed. 
This is glory for all his faithful ones.

Psalm 24: 1 - 6  (Roman Catholic) 

Psal 24:1 (NRSV) The earth is the LORD's and all that is in it, 
the world, and those who live in it; 
2 for he has founded it on the seas, 
and established it on the rivers. 
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? 
And who shall stand in his holy place? 
4 Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, 
who do not lift up their souls to what is false, 
and do not swear deceitfully. 
5 They will receive blessing from the LORD, 
and vindication from the God of their salvation. 
6 Such is the company of those who seek him, 
who seek the face of the God of Jacob. [Se'lah] 


NEW TESTAMENT: Ephesians 1: 11 - 23  (RCL) 

Ephe 1:11 (NRSV) In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. 
15 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18 so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20 God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22 And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. 


1 John 3: 1 - 3   (Roman Catholic) 

1Joh 3:1 (NRSV) See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. 


GOSPEL: Luke 6: 20 - 31  (RCL)

Luke 6:20 (NRSV) Then he looked up at his disciples and said: 
"Blessed are you who are poor, 
for yours is the kingdom of God.

22 "Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.

25 "Woe to you who are full now, 
for you will be hungry.

for you will mourn and weep.

Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 


Matthew 5: 1 - 12a  (Roman Catholic) 

Matt 5:1 (NRSV) When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 
4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 
5 "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 
6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 
7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 
8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 
9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 
10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 
11 "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.
