Today,
you're going to enter
the hush of your quiet place
and meet Jesus
in your imagination.

Make yourself comfortable
in your seat.

Close your eyes
and relax.
You'll be breathing deeply,
and relaxing
your whole body.
<>
Breathe in slowly,
and hold it.
Breathe out slowly.
Breathe in slowly,
and hold it.
Breathe out slowly.
<>
Relax your feet
and ankles.
Keep breathing in deeply,
hold it,
and breathe  out slowly.
Let your hips relax,
and then your stomach muscles
and your chest.

Allow your shoulders
to become heavy.
Let all your tension
simply drain away
Let your arms and fingers
become limp.
Let your neck sag,
and relax your face,
your forehead,
and even your eye lids.

Keep breathing in and out
 deeply
and slowly.

<>

You feel
the hot sun
beating down on your head
as your sandaled feet
almost burn
from the sand's warmth.
You look around
and find
you're in the midst
of a large crowd
headed through the desert
toward Jerusalem.
You all 
seem to be following
a very familiar person.
But you can't quite make out
who he is
until he turns
and speaks to all of you.

It's Jesus!
He's smiling
at the entire crowd.
But he seems to make
eye contact
only with you.
The smile
on his face
seems at contrast
with the words he speaks.
"Are you sure
you know what you're doing
by following me,"
he warns.
"If you become my disciple
you must commit yourself
completely!
No one else
can be as important to you
as me;
even your family!
You will be agreeing
to walk with me
on what ever path
I choose;
even if the path
leads to your death."

Seeing your confusion
he goes on
to explain,
"If you plan to build
a building,
don't you sit down first
and see if you have the money
to complete it?
Or if you were a general,
and planning to start a battle,
wouldn't you count
the number of the enemy
to see if you could win?
It's the same way
with those who follow me.
Before you do it,
count the cost!
It's not a part time
commitment
and there are no
part time disciples.
Be sure
you're ready
to give up
everything
to follow me."

Around you
the crowd
mills about in confusion.
A lot of the people
are apparently deciding
if Jesus is asking
is too much
for them.
They're turning around
and walking away.

Jesus sees you 
still standing there
as you wonder
if you can do
as he asks.
He draws you aside,
sits down on the sand with you,
and reaches out
to take your hand.
Take a moment
to simply feel
the touch of his hand
on yours.
Look deeply 
into his eyes
and see the love
and concern
he has for you.

<>

Listen
as Jesus asks you
if you really want
 to follow him.

<>

Listen as he asks
what person
or thing
is the most important to you.

<>

Then listen again, 
as he asks 
if you'd be willing to give
everything,
to abandon all,
to follow him.

<>

In the silence of your heart,
continue to look deeply
into Jesus' loving eyes
as you
give Jesus
your answer.

<>

Jesus tells you
its almost time
for him to continue his journey.
He has an appointment
he says,
ahead in Jerusalem;
an appointment
when he will give up
everything
for you.

But before he leaves,
he says
there's something important
he must tell you.

Listen
as Jesus speaks
words meant for you
and you alone.

<>

It is time now
for Jesus to leave.
Feel him
lift you to your feet,
and he embraces you.
Then he turns 
to go;
to continue
his journey.

You watch
as Jesus,
and a much smaller crowd,
walk away
into the desert.

<>

Breathe in slowly,
and hold it.
Breathe out slowly.

Breathe in slowly,
and hold it.
Breathe out slowly.

Breathe in slowly,
and hold it.
Breathe out slowly.

Breathe in slowly,
and hold it.
Breathe out slowly.

When you are ready,
you may open your eyes.

If you imagined an encounter 
in the Judean desert today,
I invite you to believe
the encounter
was very,
very,
real.

And as you search
for the pastor
who will journey with you,
please remember this encounter.
Remember
the first step
in transforming
any congregation
into a thriving community
is to
be ready to follow Jesus
completely.

And remember,
your future pastor
will not be the one
who will show you
the way 
you must go.
Instead,
your pastor will be one
who will walk beside you
across the desert
upon which
God calls you all
to travel.

And together,
on your journey,
may you offer
all glory and honor
to God.

Amen.
